Psychosocial, Ethical, and Spiritual Aspects of Contemplative Practices

Contemplative Studies

Elisa Paluan – Social Sciences, Department Of Philosophy, Sociology, Education And Applied Psychology (FISPPA), University of Padova (2022–present)

Recipient of a PhD scholarship funded by the UBI ResearchCenter, with the project: “Contemplative Psychology and Non-Reductionist Approaches to Meditation, Mindfulness, and Related Practices: Psychosocial, Ethical, and Spiritual Aspects”
Dr. Elisa Paluan’s research explores the psychosocial, ethical, and spiritual dimensions of contemplative practices, with a particular focus on their impact on both individual and collective life.

The project aims to foster a productive dialogue between contemplative practices, clinical psychology, and the social sciences. Elisa adopts an interdisciplinary and multi-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative research tools with insights from philosophy, sociology, anthropology, and theology.
Starting from a position of respect for ancient traditions, the research investigates how age-old practices—such as meditation and mindfulness—can be reinterpreted and integrated into contemporary contexts, promoting personal well-being and enhancing the quality of human relationships.

Elisa is also involved in monitoring the Postgraduate Program in Contemplative Studies at the University of Padova, an experience that allows her to closely observe the learning and transformation processes of students throughout the two-year academic journey.

Supported by her doctoral program and through ongoing dialogue with the Italian Buddhist Union (UBI), Elisa is committed to contributing to a deeper understanding of the role of contemplative practices in daily life and their evolutionary potential for individuals, groups, and communities.
