Buddhist Studies

Buddhist Studies analyze Buddhist traditions through an interdisciplinary approach, integrating the history of religions, philosophy, linguistics, and philology, with the aim of promoting a critical and scholarly understanding of their historical and cultural characteristics.

Buddhist Studies constitute an interdisciplinary field that explores Buddhist traditions in all their historical and contemporary richness. This area of research includes the history of religions, philosophy, linguistics, philology, and other disciplines, with the aim of analyzing and understanding the various expressions of Buddhism across centuries. A key aspect of this field is the comparative and intercultural approach, which highlights both the differences and convergences among Buddhist traditions, offering a more nuanced and comprehensive representation of the phenomenon.

The Study Center of the Italian Buddhist Union is committed to elevating Buddhist Studies to the level of other well-established disciplines within the field of religious studies in Italy. To this end, it promotes the creation of educational programs, such as degree courses and advanced training, as well as research positions specifically dedicated to this tradition—understood both as a living religion and as a rich heritage of practices and contemplative forms. A first step in this direction was the funding of research on existing textual heritage in Italy, such as the meticulous cataloging of texts preserved in the Tucci Archive and in the library of the Italian Institute for Oriental Studies.

Furthermore, the Study Center has co-funded scholarships within the Doctoral School of Religious Studies (DREST) at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, for research projects related to Buddhist Studies. The goal is to support the education of scholars and translators with broad and diversified competencies, working toward the creation of a linguistic center entirely dedicated to the Buddhadharma, in collaboration with universities and international institutions already active in the field.
