The Bamberg Mathematical Consciousness Science Initiative (BAMΞ) at the Otto-Friedrich University of Bamberg is inviting applications for a two-year Postdoctoral Researcher position within its Next-Generation Theories of Consciousness Project (NEXTOC).
BAMΞ is an international initiative devoted to Mathematical Consciousness Science and interdisciplinary research on consciousness. NEXTOC aims to develop a new paradigm for formulating theories of consciousness, capable of integrating theoretical and empirical approaches that are currently often investigated separately.
The research directions considered by the project include new introspective and phenomenological methodologies, the study and mapping of non-ordinary and meditative states of consciousness, insights from contemplative traditions and practices, mathematical and dynamical models, novel approaches to measuring consciousness, and the challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence.
Applications are welcomed from researchers across a broad range of disciplines — including neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science, philosophy, mathematics, physics and computer science — provided that their PhD or postdoctoral work has directly engaged with consciousness.
The successful candidate will contribute to the development of the NEXTOC project, prepare academic publications and conference presentations, collaborate with researchers within BAMΞ and its international network, and co-organise scientific workshops related to the project.
The position is full-time, remunerated according to E13 TV-L, and fixed-term for two years. The preferred starting date is 1 January 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter. Where compatible with the role’s responsibilities, part of the work may also be carried out remotely.
Applications should be submitted in English as a single PDF file to applications@bamxi.org. Required materials include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, academic publications, links to recordings of scientific talks if available, academic references, one academic writing sample, and a statement explaining whether and how AI tools were used in preparing the application and writing sample.
Application deadline: 5 November 2026, end of day (CET).
Full details are available in the official call published by the University of Bamberg.
